Tamil Nadu: Newlywed Bride Commits Suicide Over Dowry Demand
In the serene town of Tiruppur, a profound silence now envelops the home of Annadurai, a garment businessman. His daughter, Ridhanya, aged 27, is no longer with them. Her departure wasn't due to illness or accident but because she couldn't bear the cruelty masked as marriage any longer.
Ridhanya's family, shattered by her loss, gathered outside the government hospital while her body underwent post-mortem. Their grief soon turned into anger as her messages became public. The police acted swiftly, arresting her husband Kavin Kumar and his parents, Eswaramoorthy and Chithradevi. They face charges related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.

Seven Messages of Despair
Before taking her life, Ridhanya sent seven WhatsApp audio messages to her father. Each message was filled with pain and sorrow. Her voice quivered as she apologised for the decision she was about to make. "I don't want to be a burden to you all my life," she expressed. "They are assaulting me mentally, while he is torturing me physically."
In another message, she conveyed her despair: "Everyone wants me to compromise... they say life is like this. But no one can understand what I'm going through." She felt trapped by societal expectations that demanded endurance and a marriage devoid of love. Her final words to her father still resonate: "You and mom are my world. Until my last breath, you've been my hope... but I hurt you badly. I'm sorry, father. Everything is over. I'm leaving."
A Call for Change
Ridhanya's tragic story isn't unique in India. Many women suffer silently in marriages burdened by dowry demands and abuse each year. Despite laws against dowry, enforcement remains weak, and domestic violence stigma continues to silence many victims.
On the day of her death, Ridhanya left home saying she was visiting Mondipalayam temple. However, her journey ended tragically in a parked car where she consumed pesticide tablets. When found lifeless with foam at her mouth, it told the story her lips could no longer share.
The Illusion of a Joyful Marriage
Just three months prior, Ridhanya had entered what should have been a joyful new chapter with Kavin Kumar in April. The wedding was grand with 100 sovereigns of gold and a ₹70-lakh Volvo car as dowry gifts. Yet behind these lavish offerings lay manipulation and abuse.
Ridhanya refused to remain silent even in her final moments; her recorded words now serve as an urgent call for action from families and society alike: listen more closely; believe those who speak out; protect those who need it most.
No daughter should ever feel compelled to say: "I don't like this life; I'm leaving." Her story urges us all towards change so that others may find hope instead of despair within their lives.
