Tamil Nadu Holiday on April 23 for Voting: Tamil Nadu is all set for voting in a single phase on Wednesday, 23 April 2026. With all 234 Assembly constituencies up for grabs, the state government has introduced a series of measures-including a public holiday and strict "dry days" to ensure a smooth and high-turnout election.

The results of this high-stakes battle are scheduled to be announced on 4 May 2026.

Public Holiday Declared Under Negotiable Instruments Act

Following directives from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Tamil Nadu government has officially declared 23 April a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act. This declaration ensures that the democratic process takes precedence over routine business, allowing the electorate ample time to reach polling stations.

What Stays Closed?

Government Offices: Most state and central government departments will be shut.

Banks: Physical bank branches across the state will remain closed on Thursday.

Commercial Establishments: Shops and industrial units are required to provide a paid holiday to their staff.

Digital Banking Update: While physical branches are closed, online services including UPI, net banking, and mobile apps will remain fully operational. ATMs will also continue to function for cash withdrawals.

School and University Closures: A Long Weekend for Students

Educational institutions have significantly adjusted their calendars to accommodate the election. Most notably, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has paved the way by granting students an extended break.

23 & 24 April: Public holiday and additional leave granted to allow students to travel to their home constituencies.

25 & 26 April: Regular weekend holidays.

This creates a four-day break for many students. Furthermore, all government and private schools will remain closed on 23 April, as many school buildings serve as designated polling stations.

72-Hour Liquor Ban (Dry Days)

To maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents during the voting period, all TASMAC liquor outlets will observe a mandatory three-day closure.

The restriction begins at 10:00 am on 21 April and will remain in effect until midnight on 23 April. This total ban on the sale of alcohol applies to all retail outlets, bars, and clubs across the state.

Mandatory Paid Holiday for Workers

The ECI has reiterated that every eligible voter is entitled to a paid holiday on polling day. This rule is stringent and applies to:

Permanent Employees: In business, trade, and industrial undertakings.

Daily Wage Earners: Including casual workers and labourers.

Commuters: Voters who work in a different district or constituency from where they are registered are also legally entitled to a paid day off to travel and cast their vote.

By implementing these measures, the Tamil Nadu government aims to remove any logistical or financial barriers, encouraging every citizen to participate in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The following services will remain open and functional:

Transport: Public buses and private cabs/taxis.

Healthcare: Hospitals, clinics, and medical shops (pharmacies).

Hospitality: Hotels and restaurants (note: liquor will not be served in resorts or high-end hotels during the dry day period).
