Tamil Nadu Holiday 2025: Jackpot For Govt Employees As The Year Presents 10 Long Weekends Other Than Pongal

The year 2025 is shaping up to be a holiday jackpot for government employees in Tamil Nadu, with ample opportunities for extended weekends thanks to a combination of public holidays, weekends, and strategic leave planning.

January: Kickstarting the Year with a Nine-Day Break

Tamil Nadu Holiday

January begins with a rare 9-day Pongal holiday window. Employees who take leave on Monday, January 13, can enjoy an extended vacation as January 11 is the second Saturday, and January 12 is a Sunday. But if not applying a leave on January 13, it will be a six-day holiday.

However, this luxury comes with a catch: Saturday, January 25, will be a working day for all government departments, PSUs, and educational institutions to compensate.
February: A Four-Day Escape for Thai Poosam

Thai Poosam on February 11, a Tuesday, provides an opportunity for another long weekend. Employees who apply for leave on Monday, February 10, can enjoy a four-day break, with February 9 and 10 being the second Saturday and Sunday.

April: A Month of Festive Breaks

April promises multiple holiday weekends:

  • April 1 (Tuesday): The annual closing of accounts for commercial and cooperative banks creates a three-day weekend for banking employees.
  • Mahaveer Jayanthi (April 10, Thursday): A four-day weekend is possible by taking leave on April 11 (Friday), as April 12 and 13 are the second Saturday and Sunday.
  • Tamil New Year (April 14, Monday): An automatic three-day weekend for all employees.
  • Good Friday (April 18, Friday): Another chance for a three-day break.

August: Festivities Galore

August is brimming with holidays:

  • Independence Day (August 15, Friday) offers a three-day weekend.
  • Krishna Jayanthi (August 16, Saturday).
  • Vinayakar Chathurthi (August 27, Wednesday) could create a mid-week holiday break.

September: A Long Weekend for Milad-un-Nabi

  • Milad-un-Nabi falls on Friday, September 5, granting a three-day weekend.

October: Deepavali and Dual Holidays

  • Deepavali (October 20, Monday) promises another three-day weekend.
  • Vijaya Dasami and Gandhi Jayanthi (October 2, Thursday) fall on the same day this year, combining two holidays into one and slightly reducing the overall count of holiday breaks.

Holidays Lost to Weekends

Despite the abundance of holidays, employees will "lose" six holidays in 2025:

  • Three holidays fall on Sundays.
  • Two holidays land on Saturdays, which are already designated holidays.
  • Vijaya Dasami, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanthi, merges two holidays into one.

A Total of 24 Public Holidays

Under the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881, 24 days have been declared public holidays in Tamil Nadu for 2025. While a few holidays overlap with weekends, the remaining provide ample opportunities for relaxation, travel, and celebration, especially with strategic planning around second Saturdays and Sundays.
