Tamil Nadu Dam Levels On August 6: Check Water Levels In Mettur & Other Dams
The water levels in dams On Tuesday across Tamil Nadu remained largely unchanged from the previous day.
While the Mettur Dam has reached its full capacity, other dams like Bhavanisagar, Papanasam, and Parambikulam saw minor increases in water levels but are still far from full capacity. Notably, the Thirumoorthy Dam experienced a two-foot rise in water levels on Monday.

The Mettur Dam achieved full capacity two weeks ago after Karnataka released water into the Cauvery River, following the monsoon rains. This surge in inflow, exceeding the outflow, steadily increased the dam's water level. Tamil Nadu's extensive network of 116 large dams, managed primarily by the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD), is crucial for the state's water management, serving purposes such as drinking water supply and electricity generation.
Among these, key dams like the Mettur Dam on the Cauvery River and the Vaigai Dam in the Western Ghats are vital for agriculture, power generation, and water supply. Despite occasional disputes, the Mullaperiyar Dam remains a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu's water security.
These dams play a critical role in regulating river flows, managing floods and droughts, and contributing significantly to the state's socio-economic development through irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydropower generation.
