Tamil Nadu Dam Levels: Mettur To Reach Full Capacity Today; Check Water Levels In Other Dams On July 30

The water level in the Mettur Dam surged past 118.410 feet at 8 pm on Monday, approaching its full capacity of 120 feet. This rise follows an afternoon inflow of 121,934 cusecs, which later decreased to 91,368 cusecs by nightfall.

The surge in water levels is attributed to the release of water from the Krishna Raja Sagara and Kabini dams, which have also reached near-full levels of 124.800 feet and 64.200 feet, respectively. Just two weeks ago, the water level in the Mettur Dam was a mere 44.62 feet. The situation escalated on July 14, when Karnataka began releasing water into the Cauvery River at a rate of 20,000 cusecs, later increasing the flow to 80,000 cusecs.

Tamil Nadu's extensive network of dams is crucial for managing the state's water resources. These dams are essential for maintaining a stable supply of water for drinking, agriculture, and electricity generation. The state is home to 116 large dams, with 78 managed by the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD).

Key dams, such as the Mettur Dam on the Cauvery River and the Vaigai Dam in the Western Ghats, play vital roles in agriculture, power generation, and overall water management.

Apart from Mettur, several other dams have also experienced increased water levels.
