Tamil Nadu's Marina Beach Cleans Up: Coast Guard Leads International Coastal Clean-Up Day Initiative
On International Coastal Cleanup Day, a widespread took place across India, with the Indian Coast Guard leading efforts to clear trash from over 200 beaches. The event, which took place on a Saturday, saw a significant turnout, including Chennai Corporation staff, NGOs, students, and everyday citizens, all coming together to tackle pollution on the shores of Marina Beach in Chennai.
IG Donny Michael, Commander of the Coast Guard Region (East), highlighted the nationwide scope of the cleanup, encompassing regions from Vizag and Kakinada to several beaches in Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry, aiming to bolster public awareness about maintaining clean beaches.

The environmental initiative extended beyond Chennai, with Kerala witnessing a remarkable mobilization of volunteers and environmental activists who cleaned around 560 seacoasts.
Dr. V Subhash Chandra Bose, the Cleanup Campaign State Chairman, emphasized the collaborative effort involving various agencies, ministries, and organizations under the slogan 'Room for Life'. This concerted action underlines India's resolve to combat coastal pollution, particularly the menace of plastic, which poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems.

In Thiruvananthapuram, NCC cadets took the lead at Shangumugom Beach, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship by removing trash scattered along the shore. This act of service was mirrored in Mumbai, where Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, marked the occasion at Juhu Beach.

Distinguished figures such as the Governor of Maharashtra, C P Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Eknath Sambhaji Shinde, and Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, also participated, showing the high-level commitment to this cause.
The Ministry of Environment has been actively promoting beach cleanliness since 2018, beginning with the '#IamSavingMyBeach' campaign launched on World Environment Day under the theme 'Beat Plastic'. This initiative has grown, with regular clean-up activities being organized in collaboration with state governments and local bodies to tackle marine litter. The annual observance of International Coastal Cleanup Day on the third Saturday of September serves as a global call to action, urging communities worldwide to cleanse beaches, raise awareness about marine pollution, and protect the oceans.
This global event reinforces the crucial message that preserving and safeguarding the world's oceans and waterways is a shared responsibility. By addressing the issue of marine trash, the event aims to inspire a collective effort to restore cleanliness and greenery to nature and the environment. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to mitigating pollution on the world's beaches, emphasizing the importance of active participation in environmental protection efforts.
