Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Retains Perambur Seat, Quits Tiruchirappalli East

Vijay on Sunday resigned as MLA from the Tiruchirappalli East Assembly constituency after deciding to retain the Perambur seat following his swearing-in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The resignation came just hours after Vijay took oath as the ninth Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during a grand ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The actor-turned-politician formally informed Assembly authorities about his decision to vacate the Tiruchirappalli East constituency while continuing as MLA from Perambur.

Vijay had contested and won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, leading Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to a historic electoral performance. His party emerged as the single largest force in the state, paving the way for the formation of a new government under his leadership.

Political observers believe Vijay chose to retain Perambur due to its strategic importance in Chennai and the strong support base the constituency offers to TVK in the capital region. The resignation from Tiruchirappalli East will now trigger a by-election in the constituency.

The swearing-in ceremony in Chennai witnessed the presence of senior political leaders, party workers, film personalities and thousands of supporters as Vijay officially began his tenure as Chief Minister. The event marked a major political milestone in Tamil Nadu, with the popular actor making a successful transition from cinema to state leadership.

Following his oath-taking, Vijay is expected to hold key meetings with senior ministers and government officials regarding cabinet portfolios and the new administration's policy priorities.

With Vijay now retaining Perambur and stepping down from Tiruchirappalli East, attention is expected to shift towards the upcoming by-election and the next phase of the TVK government in Tamil Nadu.
