Tamil Nadu & Chennai Weather Update: Heavy Rains To Lash Many Districts: Is There A School Holiday?

Thirteen districts including Tamil Nadu's capital Chennai is witnessing heavy rains on Tuesday. The same weather is expected to continue for next two days, as per Regional Meterological Centre.

Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts are on an orange alert, while Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Villupuram, and the Puducherry and Karaikal regions are on a yellow alert. More rain is expected across several districts, with heavy showers predicted for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and other areas on Wednesday.

By Thursday, rain is forecasted to spread across 24 districts, including Chennai, Thanjavur, and Madurai. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari districts will witness heavy downour, the RMC stated.

On Tuesday, authorities declared a holiday for schools in the early morning, but the late announcement created confusion. Many students had already left for school, leaving parents frustrated. One parent shared online, "It's chaos today. My kids left for school only to hear the holiday announcement afterward. This especially impacts kids who commute by auto and bus." Another user urged authorities to announce school closures by 6 a.m. to avoid inconvenience. "Either declare the holiday by 6 a.m. or let them go. It's confusing otherwise," they wrote. Another parent echoed this sentiment, noting the confusion caused in the Pallikaranai area. Some, however, questioned the need for rain-related closures altogether. One user commented, "We never had rain holidays growing up. We just wore raincoats and went."

Will Schools Remain Closed Tomorrow?

Cuddalore, Mayiladutharai and Karaikal have been declared holidays. However, there is no update on Chennai, yet.
