Tamil Nadu Braces For More Rains: Is There A Holiday For Schools On Friday, November 29?

Tamil Nadu is bracing for continued heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Fengal, which is set to impact the region for a few more days. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), 19 districts will experience significant downpours this Friday, raising concerns about flooding and other weather-related disruptions.

On Friday, cities including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ariyalur, and Thanjavur are under an orange alert, indicating that residents should prepare for heavier rainfall. Additionally, the districts of Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram have been placed on a yellow alert, signalling potential moderate rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is anticipated to evolve into a cyclonic storm by the evening of November 27, 2024. As of 11 am on the same day, the system was located approximately 110 km east of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, and about 530 km south-southeast of Chennai. The depression is currently moving at a speed of 10 kmph in a north-northwest direction.

The IMD's latest bulletin indicates that the depression will skirt along the Sri Lankan coast before intensifying. By November 30, it is expected to cross the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram as a deep depression, bringing with it wind speeds of 50-70 kmph and potential gusts of up to 85 kmph.

Is there a holiday for schools on Friday, November 28?

In light of the impending rains, several schools across districts including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Villupuram remained closed on Thursday.

However, as of now, only a holiday has been declared for schools in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Puducherry and Karaikal on Friday, November 29. However, there has been no official announcement regarding school closures in Chennai.
