Tamil Actor Kasthuri Shankar Booked For Remarks On Telugu-Speaking People
In a recent turn of events, Kasthuri Shankar, a Tamil actor known for her roles across South Indian cinema and television, found herself embroiled in controversy following her inflammatory remarks aimed at Telugu-speaking individuals residing in Tamil Nadu. This incident unfolded at a gathering that called for "legal protection" for Brahmins, citing an increase in "rising hate speech" against this community within the state.
The fallout from her comments led to legal action, with the Egmore police registering a case against her under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on a complaint lodged by the All India Telugu Federation, spearheaded by Dr. C M K. Reddy. The charges against Kasthuri include wantonly provoking riots, fostering enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, and residence, inciting fear or alarm among the public, and disseminating statements containing false information.

Kasthuri's remarks were made during an event hosted by the Indu Makkal Katchi of Arjun, where she voiced her grievances over being marginalized in the Tamil film industry because of her Brahmin heritage. In her critique, she indirectly targeted DMK ministers of Telugu descent, sparking a significant controversy. "Who are you to say that Brahmins who came here long ago are not Tamils? Since they cannot call themselves Tamils, they coined the term Dravidians. That's why they couldn't name their party (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) Tamilargal (Tamils) Munnetra Kazhagam," she asserted.
However, as her comments ignited backlash, Kasthuri stepped back, clarifying her stance. She explained that her criticisms were not directed at the entire Telugu-speaking population in Tamil Nadu but only at certain individuals within the DMK. "I reiterate that my expressed opinions are contextually specific to certain persons and not general to the greater Telugu community. It was never my intention to hurt or offend my Telugu extended family. I am sorry for any inadvertently ill feeling," Kasthuri stated, retracting her earlier remarks concerning the Telugu community.
Kasthuri, a frequent face on Tamil and English news channels, is recognized for her critical views on the DMK government in Tamil Nadu. Her participation in the contentious event and subsequent comments highlight the complex interplay of language, politics, and identity in the state's cultural fabric.
To conclude, the incident involving Kasthuri Shankar underscores the sensitivity surrounding linguistic and communal identities in Tamil Nadu. While she has since apologized and retracted her statements, the episode serves as a reminder of the potential repercussions of public figures' comments on societal harmony.
