Russian woman allegedly raped in Tamil Nadu; 6 arrested

Chennai, July 18: Six people have been detained for allegedly sexually assaulting a 21-year-old Russian woman who is here on a tour, police said today.

The victim, who is in India as a tourist, was found unconscious at her room in a private guest house on July 16. She was reportedly seriously injured in the assault by at least three persons.

She had suffered grievous injuries during the assault and Tiruvannamalai town station police admitted her to government medical college hospital after being alerted by the locals.

On examination, the doctors found injuries on her body, including bite marks, and alerted police, they said.

Police suspect that the foreign national lost consciousness under the influence of some drug, the nature of which was not known immediately.

The woman, who is here for about a week, has regained consciousness and investigation is underway, the police added.

The police have filed Section 376 and 511 based on the initial inquiry following which they will be taken to the court for judicial remand. All the belongings of the girl have been found intact by the police. Further investigation is underway.

Tiruvannamalai is a popular temple town in the state about 190 km from Chennai.

The incident comes against the backdrop of the alleged rape of an 11-year-old hearing-impaired girl by 17 people over the past seven months in her apartment complex in Chennai.
