Outrage Over Chennai Motivational Speaker’s Remarks: Mahavishnu Taken Into Custody Upon Arrival In Chennai

Motivational speaker Mahavishnu was taken into custody by Chennai Police upon his arrival at Chennai airport from Australia via Singapore on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports, police officers were stationed at Gate 5 and escorted Mahavishnu through an alternate exit, preventing him from interacting with the large group of media personnel awaiting his arrival.

Outrage Over Motivational Speaker s Remarks Mahavishnu Taken Into Custody Upon Arrival In Chennai

The development comes after a complaint filed on Friday by the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently-abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) at Saidapet police station. The complaint called for legal action against Mahavishnu for making derogatory remarks about differently-abled individuals. It highlighted a particular segment of his speech where he claimed that disabilities are a result of sins committed in a previous life.

Mahavishnu, who runs the Paramporul Foundation, has faced severe backlash from civil society after videos of his speech at a government school in Chennai went viral on social media. The speech, intended to boost students' self-confidence, took an unexpected turn when Mahavishnu deviated from the topic to discuss spiritual ideas.

During his lecture, Mahavishnu claimed that "Gurukulams were systematically destroyed by the British" and suggested that ancient practices like reciting mantras could cause "fire rain," heal the body, and even enable a person to fly. He blamed British colonial rule for the loss of such "secrets" once preserved on palm leaves.

Mahavishnu further implied that people's current circumstances were a result of their actions in previous lives. He stated, "If God was kind, everyone should be born equal. One is born rich while another is born poor. One is born a criminal while another is born a hero. Why such differences? What you did in your last birth, you were given this birth." Many found these comments offensive and discriminatory.

A school staff member interrupted the lecture, objecting to Mahavishnu's remarks and reminding him that he was invited to deliver a motivational talk, not a spiritual discourse. This led to a heated exchange, with Mahavishnu accusing the staff member of having "ego issues."

The incident sparked widespread criticism, leading to a strong response from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. In addressing the controversy, Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu's high-quality textbooks already provide students with the best scientific knowledge they need to succeed. He stressed that teachers are fully capable of equipping students with the critical thinking skills required to face future challenges with confidence.

In the wake of the incident, two government school principals were transferred for allowing Mahavishnu to address the students, further underscoring the seriousness with which the state is treating the matter.
