OPS Joins DMK Camp: Decoding the AIADMK Fallout and Southern Power Play

O. Panneerselvam (OPS) has joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, bringing to a close his long and turbulent association with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The move alters political equations within the AIADMK, affects the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the State, and puts fresh focus on the Thevar vote belt in southern Tamil Nadu.

Addressing a press conference after joining the ruling party, Panneerselvam praised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, saying the entire country is closely watching his leadership and that he has set the grammar for how to run a political party. He said that over the last five years, Stalin has delivered growth across sectors and provided efficient administration to the people of Tamil Nadu. He also claimed that after Amma's (J. Jayalalithaa) death, lakhs of AIADMK cadre have joined the DMK under Thalapathy's leadership.

In contrast, he mounted a sharp attack on Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), accusing him of conducting himself like an autocrat with an arrogant approach. He said Palaniswami has created a situation in which the AIADMK may never be able to achieve success in politics. The remarks take their long-running rivalry, which began after Jayalalithaa's death, into a new electoral phase.

From 'Dharma Yudham' to DMK

OPS built his post-Jayalalithaa political identity on rebellion and moral positioning. In February 2017, his meditation at Jayalalithaa's memorial and the launch of his "dharma yudham" against V.K. Sasikala projected him as a leader fighting for the party's soul. He later locked horns with EPS in a prolonged leadership battle over control of the AIADMK's organisation and symbol.

By aligning with the DMK, the AIADMK's principal rival, OPS has made his most decisive political shift. For a leader who repeatedly invoked loyalty to Jayalalithaa's legacy, the move marks a clear break from his earlier stance.

Describing his entry into the DMK, he said it gave him immense happiness to join the "Thaai Kazhagam" (parent party), referring to the party founded by Perarignar Anna, C.N. Annadurai. He thanked DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, addressing him as Thalapathy, and framed the decision as a return rather than a defection.

The Tea Shop Owner Who Became Three-Time CM

OPS's political journey began in Bodinaickanur in Theni district, where he once ran a tea shop. He went on to become Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu three times. In 2001, he was sworn in after Jayalalithaa was disqualified by the Supreme Court. In 2014, he took charge when she was sent to prison. In 2016, he administered oath at 1 a.m. following her death. In each instance, he functioned as a stand-in, stepping aside when political circumstances changed. He later served as Deputy Chief Minister in the EPS-led AIADMK government between 2017 and 2021.

BJP Factor and Changing Alliances

After Jayalalithaa's death, national political currents became more visible in Tamil Nadu. OPS's 2017 rebellion was widely perceived to have tacit backing from sections within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, EPS consolidated control over the AIADMK organisation and symbol over time. OPS later walked out of the NDA after he was not given an appointment to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter's visit to Tamil Nadu.

In August last year, OPS and Stalin met during their morning walks at the Theosophical Society in Chennai. On the same day, OPS visited Stalin's residence, describing it as a courtesy visit to enquire about the death of the Chief Minister's elder brother. Six days ago, the two leaders met again when OPS congratulated Stalin on completing five years in office. Those meetings now appear to have laid the groundwork for his formal entry into the DMK ahead of the polls.

Southern Belt and Thevar Vote

Southern districts such as Madurai and Theni have a strong Thevar community presence and have traditionally formed a support base for the AIADMK. The political space in this region is fragmented. Sasikala is attempting a comeback. T.T.V. Dhinakaran leads the AMMK. OPS retains pockets of personal loyalty in Theni and surrounding areas. Nainar Nagendran represents the BJP in the State and also belongs to the community.

With OPS now campaigning under the DMK banner, anti-DMK votes in the region could divide further during the Assembly polls. At the same time, his exit from the AIADMK removes one of the prominent internal challengers to EPS, potentially allowing Palaniswami to consolidate control within the party before facing the electorate.

DMK's Move Ahead of Elections

For the DMK, inducting OPS ahead of the polls adds a familiar face with influence in the southern belt. His past shifts may draw scrutiny, but even limited impact in key constituencies could affect electoral outcomes.

From tea shop owner to three-time Chief Minister, from AIADMK loyalist to DMK entrant, OPS's political career has seen repeated turns. His latest move comes at a crucial moment, with the Assembly elections approaching and alliances in flux. Whether it reshapes the electoral map in southern Tamil Nadu will be tested at the ballot box.
