Legacy of Karunanidhi: Stalin's Ascension & Dravidian Model
It has been five years since the passing of M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the revered leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. In the wake of his demise, some right-wing critics speculated that the DMK would not come to power without him, questioning the suitability of his son M.K. Stalin as the Chief Minister.
In 2021, the voters of Tamil Nadu proved these skeptics wrong by electing Stalin with a resounding majority. Since assuming office as the Chief Minister of the State, Stalin has embarked on a transformative journey, embracing his father's legacy while implementing his own vision for Tamil Nadu.

This article explores the significant milestones and achievements of Stalin's rule, particularly the establishment of the "Dravidian model" and his unwavering commitment to progressive governance.
Embracing the legacy
While taking oath as Chief Minister, Stalin invoked the memory of his father by stating his expanded name -- "I Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin..." This gesture reflected his deep reverence for his father and emphasised the continuation of Karunanidhi's legacy in his leadership. It was not just a swearing-in ceremony, but an honour to his late father. It showed his commitment to preserving the DMK's core values and the profound influence of Karunanidhi on Tamil Nadu's political landscape.

Dravidian model
Recognising the need for a distinctive policy framework, Stalin coined the term "Dravidian model" to encapsulate his vision for governance. Building on the foundation laid by the Justice Party, which gave birth to the Dravidian movement in 1916, Stalin sought to extend and enhance the progressive principles espoused by his predecessors. His goal was to create a society free from caste-based discrimination, superstition and social inequality.

Education and welfare
Taking a proactive approach to education and welfare, Stalin initiated a pilot program in Madurai to provide breakfast to government school children. The scheme's success was evident in improved attendance rates, with some schools reporting near 100% attendance. As a result, the program has been expanded statewide, benefiting children across Tamil Nadu and promoting better educational outcomes.
Technological advancement
Following in the footsteps of his father, who spearheaded the establishment of the 'Tidel Park' in Chennai, Stalin has continued to foster technological advancements in the State. Acknowledging the significant growth of the software industry in Tamil Nadu, Stalin announced ambitious projects, including the Tidel Park in Madurai and Vellore and mini parks in Villupuram and Tirupur. These initiatives aim to decentralize the technological revolution, making it more accessible to citizens across various districts.

Empowering farmers
Inspired by Karunanidhi's historic announcement in 1990, Stalin extended support to the agricultural community through his own initiatives. In two years of his rule, Stalin's administration provided free electricity connections to 1.5 lakh farmers, a milestone that surpassed the achievements of any previous regime in Tamil Nadu. This measure significantly alleviated the burden on farmers and contributed to their overall well-being.
Social reforms
Following the footsteps of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, the pioneering social reformer, Karunanidhi passed a law in 1970 allowing individuals from all castes to become priests. Though it faced hurdles and legal battles, the verdict eventually came in support of the reform. Under Stalin's leadership, the State government issued appointment orders to 58 individuals from diverse castes as priests, further advancing the cause of caste equality.

Preserving tradition
Continuing the fight initiated during Karunanidhi's tenure, Stalin played a crucial role in securing legal permission for the traditional sport of Jallikattu. His swift action in organising a session of the State Assembly immediately after assuming power facilitated lifting of the ban on Jallikattu. This victory showcased Stalin's commitment to upholding Tamil traditions while safeguarding animal rights.
Legal battle for recognition
After a legal battle to secure a place for Karunanidhi's memorial next to Annadurai Samadhi in the Marina, Stalin emerged victorious. By fighting for this recognition, he not only honoured his father but also marked his ascension as the third-generation leader of the DMK. This legal struggle underscored the determination and leadership qualities that define Stalin's tenure.

Under Stalin's leadership, Tamil Nadu has witnessed significant progress. By embracing his father's legacy while imprinting his unique vision on the State's governance, Stalin has proven himself as a capable and compassionate leader.
From implementing the Dravidian model to prioritising education, welfare and technological advancements, he has carved a distinct path for Tamil Nadu's future. By continuing to build upon the progressive ideals of the DMK, Stalin is shaping a Tamil Nadu that reflects the aspirations of its people and upholds the principles of social justice and equality.
