Kasthuri Shankar Arrested Over Derogatory Remarks In Hyderabad

Actor Kasthuri Shankar was arrested in Hyderabad in connection with the allegations of making derogatory remarks about Telugu-speaking individuals in Tamil Nadu.

Her comments, made during a Hindu Makkal Katchi meeting, sparked criticism from Dr. Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, BJP's national co-in charge of Tamil Nadu. He demanded an apology, stating her words disrupted harmony and contradicted the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had previously dismissed Kasthuri's anticipatory bail plea. The court noted that her statements bordered on hate speech and emphasized that public figures should be cautious when discussing sensitive topics publicly. It also deemed her apology insincere, suggesting she was merely trying to justify her remarks.

Kasthuri Shankar's Apology and Clarification

On November 6, Kasthuri announced she had retracted all mentions of Telugus from her November 3 speech. She clarified it was never her intention to "hurt or offend my Telugu extended family." In a post on X, she expressed regret for any unintended ill feelings caused by her words.

Kasthuri further explained that her opinions were specifically aimed at certain individuals and not the entire Telugu community. She lamented how the controversy overshadowed more significant issues she addressed in her speech. Despite receiving numerous threats after the incident, she remained firm in her stance.

Personal Connections to the Telugu Community

A respected Telugu friend helped Kasthuri understand the broader impact of her words on the Telugu population in Tamil Nadu and beyond. She shared this insight in a post, emphasizing her longstanding connection with the community.

Kasthuri highlighted her admiration for historical figures like the Nayak kings and Kattabomman Nayaka. She fondly recalled singing Tyagaraja kritis and cherishing her film career in Telugu cinema. The Telugu people have given her recognition, love, and a sense of belonging.

The actor reiterated that she has always transcended caste and regional differences. She feels privileged to have a unique bond with the Telugu community, which has enriched both her personal and professional life.
