Karur Stampede: Madras High Court to Hear TVK’s Plea Seeking CBI Probe Today

The Madras High Court is scheduled to hear today the plea filed by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the September 27 stampede at a political rally led by actor-politician Vijay in Karur. The tragic incident claimed 41 lives and left over 60 people injured.

Advocates representing TVK, led by S Arivazhagan, made a mention before Justice M Dhandapani on Sunday. The judge directed them to file a formal petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which is scheduled for hearing today at 2 PM.

Victim Seeks Restraint on Future Rallies

In a separate development, an injured victim of the stampede moved the Madras High Court, seeking a directive to restrain the Tamil Nadu Police from granting permission for any future public rallies or meetings by Vijay and TVK until accountability is established and safety measures are ensured.

The petition, filed by Senthilkannan, argued that the tragedy was not merely accidental but resulted from reckless planning, gross mismanagement, and a complete disregard for public safety. He emphasized that the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution is sacrosanct and cannot be compromised by unregulated political gatherings. While Article 19(1)(b) guarantees the right to assemble, reasonable restrictions are allowed in the interest of public order, safety, and morality.

Senthilkannan highlighted that the Karur stampede serves as a grim reminder that unchecked public gatherings can lead to catastrophic consequences, including loss of life and serious injuries. He stressed that the State has a positive obligation to protect citizens by enforcing preventive measures and denying permissions for rallies where risks to life and public order are evident.

Vijay Receives Bomb Threat

Adding to the tense situation, Vijay reportedly received a bomb threat on Sunday, prompting a security upgrade at his Chennai residence. The development comes a day after the deadly Karur rally incident, which claimed 41 lives, including 10 children, 18 women, and 13 men.

In response, Vijay expressed profound grief over the tragedy. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the 51-year-old actor-politician stated, "My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express." He paid homage to the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Vijay also announced compensation for the victims, promising Rs 20 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 2 lakh each to the injured.
