The title "Thalapathy," meaning "Commander," reflects his leadership status among fans. He is the son of director S.A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar, and is married to Sangeetha Sornalingam. A graduate in Visual Communication from Loyola College, Chennai, Vijay is also known for his philanthropic activities and social welfare initiatives.

Formation of TVK

In February 2024, Vijay officially retired from films and launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. The party's headquarters is in Chennai, and it has declared its intent to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections with Vijay as the Chief Minister candidate.

TVK's flag features two elephants and the vakai flower, representing Tamil pride and collective progress. Despite his popularity, political analysts caution that translating stardom into votes is not guaranteed. Actor-politicians such as Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have faced hurdles in the state's political battlefield. Analysts estimate that TVK could capture anywhere between 10% to 25% of the vote share, depending on alliances and the anti-incumbency wave.
