Karthigai Deepam Festival 2024 Begins In Tiruvannamalai: Know All About The Celebration Of Light
With the commencement of the Karthigai Deepam festival at Tamil Nadu's revered Annamalaiyar Temple in Tiruvannamalai, a 10-day celebration marking a significant cultural and spiritual event has begun.
This annual festival is a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu's rich cultural tapestry, drawing millions of devotees nationwide to partake in the festivities. The grandeur of the festival is inaugurated with the hoisting of a flag on a majestic 64-foot-tall golden flagpole, an event that attracts thousands to the vicinity of the Annamalaiyar shrine.

The festival is synonymous with the veneration of Lord Shiva, epitomized by the illuminating Maha Deepam - a massive cauldron filled to the brim with ghee, set ablaze atop Arunachala Hill. This act of lighting, occurring on December 13, symbolizes Lord Shiva's manifestation as an infinite pillar of fire, a narrative rooted deeply in Hindu mythology addressing the supremacy debate between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma.
The Maha Deepam, towering five feet high and weighing 250 kilograms, is lit with a kilometer-long cotton wick, burning continuously for eleven days, serving as a beacon of divine energy and truth visible for miles around.
A Festival Steeped in Mythology and Tradition
The essence of the festival is deeply intertwined with spiritual beliefs and practices. It begins with the Bharani Deepam ceremony inside the temple, signifying the unity of individual and cosmic consciousness. This is followed by vibrant processions featuring idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, enveloping the town in a spiritual fervour. Devotees engage in Girivalam, a sacred 14-km circumambulation of Arunachala Hill, illuminating the path with rows of earthen lamps, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness.

The Pancha Murthygal Mada Veedi Festival, following the flag hoisting, spans ten days of morning and night processions, showcasing the cultural richness of Tamil Nadu. Highlighted events include the Velli Rishabha Vahanam, Velli Ther Bhavani Vaibhavam, and Maratha Ther Vaivam, each adding a unique flavour to the festival's tapestry. The Karthigai Deepam festival, aligning with the Tamil month of Karthigai and the auspicious Karthigai star, emphasizes worship and devotion towards Lord Shiva.
The Tiruvannamalai Karthigai Deepam festival stands as a testament to the spiritual and cultural significance it holds in Tamil Nadu. It is not just a celebration but a period of spiritual renewal and enlightenment, emphasizing the eternal battle of light over darkness. The festival's connection to mythology, combined with the rituals and celebrations, attracts a multitude of devotees, making it one of the state's most significant events. This melding of religious fervor, cultural richness, and spiritual awakening showcases the unique identity of Tamil Nadu and its people, marking the Karthigai Deepam festival as a pivotal event in the state's calendar.
