'Kamaraj Couldn’t Sleep Without AC': DMK MP's Controversial Statement Sparks Debate, He Later Clarifies

DMK MP Tiruchi Siva recently stirred controversy by claiming that former Chief Minister K Kamaraj couldn't sleep without air conditioning. He later clarified his intention was not to tarnish the leader's reputation. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin urged both parties to avoid giving space to those who seek to create discord and instead work towards fulfilling Kamaraj's vision of social justice and communal harmony.

During a party meeting in Perambur on July 16, Siva, who is also DMK's deputy general secretary, alleged that despite being praised for his simplicity, Kamaraj needed air conditioning to sleep. He claimed this information came from former DMK president M Karunanidhi, who said the DMK government installed air conditioners in all government guest houses.

Reactions from Political Leaders

The remarks drew criticism from Congress leaders. TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai condemned Siva for making statements without evidence, asserting no one has the right to speak ill of Kamaraj. Congress MP Jothimani also reacted strongly, highlighting Kamaraj's honesty and simplicity. She dismissed Siva's claims as false, noting that Kamaraj often stayed in government hotels or even slept under trees when necessary.

TMC leader and BJP ally G K Vasan expressed disappointment over the "baseless" accusations against Kamaraj. He credited Kamaraj with Tamil Nadu's growth and described his tenure as a golden era marked by simplicity and integrity. Vasan criticized Siva for making inaccurate statements about such a respected figure.

Siva's Clarification

Siva later clarified that his comments were not intended to damage Kamaraj's reputation. He emphasized his respect for the leader, acknowledging him as a freedom fighter who made significant sacrifices for the people. Siva highlighted Kamaraj's contributions to education and the mid-day meal scheme in schools.

He requested that his explanation be accepted and urged against further debate on his speech. Siva stated he usually speaks passionately about leaders, even those in opposition, maintaining dignity in criticism.

Stalin's Response

Reacting to the situation, Stalin recalled how rationalist leader Periyar Ramasamy praised Kamaraj as a 'pure Tamilian.' He mentioned that late Chief Minister C N Annadurai chose not to field a candidate against Kamaraj in the Gudiyatham by-election. Stalin noted Karunanidhi arranged for Kamaraj's last respects and declared his birthday as Education Development Day after his passing.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami criticized Siva's comments as "a white lie." He questioned if there was any limit to DMK's historical distortions and pointed out that it was their party member who initiated the controversy.
