Kamal Haasan To Enter Rajya Sabha From Tamil Nadu

Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief and actor Kamal Haasan is all set to enter the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu with the support of the DMK.

The party's other candidates include senior advocate and sitting MP P Wilson, renowned Tamil writer Salma, and party leader SR Sivalingam are the other nominees.

Kamal's MNM, which forayed into Tamil Nadu politics in 2018, joined the DMK alliance in 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. At that time, the actor was given the option of contesting the Lok Sabha poll or entering the Rajya Sabha once the tenure of the current MPs came to an end.

Kamal chose the second option. As part of the deal, the actor is now being sent to the Upper House of the Parliament as the MNM has already passed a resolution confirming his nomination.

The development comes at a time when the actor, popularly known as the Ulaganayagan, has landed in a controversy over the claims of 'Kannada born out of Tamil' remark.

Rajya Sabha Polls

On Monday, the Election Commission declared that biennial elections to fill six vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu will be held on July 19.

The tenure of the six incumbent members-Anbumani Ramadoss, M Shanmugam, N Chandrasegharan, M Mohammed Abdulla, P Wilson, and Vaiko- come to an end on July 25. However, the polls are unlikely to make any difference in the political equations in the Upper House.

It has to be noted that out of six seats, the three are held by the DMK and one by its alliance partner MDMK. The other two seats are held by AIADMK and its alliance partner PMK.

On the other hand, the BJP is keen on sending its former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai. The saffron party is an alliance partner of the AIADMK. However,
