As Tamil Nadu continues to celebrate the vibrant Pongal festival, there has been growing curiosity among residents and tourists about the availability of liquor across the state. Social media and messaging platforms have been flooded with queries on whether government-run TASMAC outlets and private bars are functioning as usual during the festive period, especially since several states have imposed temporary restrictions on alcohol sales this week.

The confusion has been heightened by developments in Maharashtra, where authorities have enforced a strict four-day ban on liquor sales in several major cities. With civic body elections scheduled in 29 municipal corporation areas - including Mumbai, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad - alcohol sales and consumption have been prohibited from January 13 to January 16.

During this period, all liquor shops, bars, permit rooms and alcohol-serving establishments in those regions have been ordered to remain shut. The move is part of election-related regulations aimed at ensuring peaceful polling and preventing undue influence.

Officials in Maharashtra have also warned of stringent action against anyone found violating the dry-day norms. This has led many travellers and festival visitors in Tamil Nadu to wonder whether similar restrictions are in place here, especially with thousands of tourists arriving in the state to enjoy Pongal celebrations.

In Tamil Nadu, however, the situation is different. Liquor retail and bar operations are governed by a separate set of rules that apply on specific notified days. While TASMAC outlets and licensed bars function normally on most days during the Pongal festival, there is a designated day when alcohol sales are not permitted under state regulations.

That day falls on January 16, which is observed as Thiruvalluvar Day in Tamil Nadu. On this day, the sale of alcohol is officially prohibited across the state. It is one of the few days in the calendar year when liquor sales are fully suspended under Tamil Nadu's excise rules. Apart from Thiruvalluvar Day, TASMAC outlets are also shut on election days and during vote counting in the respective constituencies.

District administrations have already begun issuing formal instructions to ensure strict compliance. In Coimbatore, for instance, the district administration has announced that all licensed liquor-selling establishments must remain closed on January 16. This includes government-run TASMAC retail outlets, standalone bars, bars attached to recreational clubs, star hotels, Tamil Nadu Hotels, tourism department bars, and outlets selling imported foreign liquor.
The official order applies to all categories of licences, including FL1 (retail liquor shops and bars), FL2 (recreational club bars), FL3 and FL3A (bars in hotels), FL3AA (tourism department bars), and FL11 (foreign liquor retail). Authorities have made it clear that no exemptions will be granted, and any violation of the ban will invite strict legal action.

Law enforcement agencies and excise officials will be deployed to monitor compliance throughout the day. Surprise inspections and checks are expected, especially in urban centres and tourist hubs, to prevent illegal sale or storage of alcohol.

The closure also coincides with the public holiday observed on Thiruvalluvar Day, when schools, colleges and many government offices remain shut across Tamil Nadu.
For visitors travelling to cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and hill stations during the Pongal holidays, it is important to plan accordingly. Those intending to purchase liquor are advised to do so in advance, as no sales will be permitted on January 16 anywhere in the state.

While Pongal celebrations continue with cultural events, family gatherings and temple visits, authorities have reiterated that the temporary restriction is meant to ensure public order and respect the significance of the day.
