Is Annamalai Resigning As Tamil Nadu BJP Chief? An Old Video Of His Reaction To Rumours Goes Viral
Amid rumours of stepping down, a video of Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai's response to his possible resignation has gone viral.
In the viral video, he is responding to a question on stepping down, as the state BJP chief. Annamalai is seen downplaying the significance of the position, asserting that he is not in politics for power.

The Political Turmoil
The speculation comes amid talks of a renewed alliance between the BJP and AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. The recent meeting between AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has fueled rumors of a leadership change in the Tamil Nadu BJP.
Annamalai was blamed for the breakup with AIADMK in 2023. Thereafter, both the state leadership and the AIADMK were critical of each other.
The AIADMK had taken objections to Annamalai's comments on Dravidian stalwart Annadurai and former party chief J Jayalalithaa.
Annamalai On Stepping Down As TN BJP Chief
In the viral video, Annamalai likened his position to an onion, stating, "Even if you peel it, there will be nothing inside. I didn't enter politics to enjoy power; I had more power before joining politics. I have seen ten times more power than this."
He reiterated that losing his post would not affect his dedication to public life. "Even if I lose my position, I will enjoy my life. I visited my farm yesterday. In this small world, I have a small life. However, I will never move away from politics or shy away from expressing my views."
Annamalai emphasized his unwavering allegiance to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, "I came to politics because of Modi ji. The country will not see a politician like him for the next 100 years. Annamalai will never do adjustment politics."
Leadership Change Linked to Caste Equations?
The saffron party prefers to have a non-Gounder leader to balance caste equations if it is going to have an alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026.
Both Annamalai and AIADMK chief Palaniswami hail from the influential Gounder community in the western Kongu region, a factor the BJP is reportedly considering in its political calculations.
According to a report in The Indian Express, Annamalai was informed of this strategy during a recent meeting with Amit Shah in Delhi. While the discussions focused on reconciliation between the BJP and AIADMK, Annamalai was assured of his long-term political relevance.
Annamalai's Future Role in BJP
BJP insiders told the English daily that Annamalai remains a vital part of the party's future in Tamil Nadu. "Delhi sees a bright future for him," a party source stated. Annamalai reportedly assured the leadership of his loyalty, even expressing willingness to work as an ordinary cadre if required.
"Whether he remains as the Tamil Nadu BJP president or takes on a different role, Annamalai will continue to play a crucial part in the party's long-term strategy," a senior leader said.
However, Nainar Nagendran, a popular leader from Tirunelveli, is likely to replace Annamalai.
Annamalai On Alliance Talks
Annamalai, who met the central leadership after EPS had a meeting with Shah, softened his stand on the AIADMK. On the alliance rumours, he told media: "Our Home Minister has spoken. Please take his reaction as the final word on the matter."
The Tamil Nadu BJP chief claimed that he had given a comprehensive report to the central leadership.
"It would be wrong for me to disclose what I spoke about. We have discussed in detail the present and future of Tamil Nadu and what is needed for the people's welfare," he added.
The next state elections in Tamil Nadu is expected to be held in May 2026.
