How Chennai's 3 New Flyovers Will Tackle Traffic Congestion

For long, Chennai commuters have struggled to commute during the peak hours due to traffic jams in key areas. In order to ease the traffic congestion, the the Tamil Nadu government, in its 2025 budget, has announced the construction of three flyovers, each designed to tackle the city's traffic snarls.

These flyovers are expected to be a game-changer as they promise to bring relief to millions of commuters who navigate Chennai's bustling streets daily. Take a look at the projects:

Chennai s 3 New Flyovers

A T-Shaped Flyover In Velacherry

The key project among the three is the T-shaped flyover in Velachery, which will be constructed for 3 kilometers, from Five Furlong Road to Guru Nanak College. A circular roundabout at the 100 Feet Road-Velachery Main Road junction, designed to ensure seamless right turns for vehicles coming from either direction. No more endless waits at the Phoenix Market City junction during peak hours!

It is expected to be a game changer and the cost of the flyover is Rs 310 crore. "Vehicles on the Saidapet-Velachery stretch move at a snail's pace. This flyover will eliminate stoppages and ease congestion on 100 Feet Road," The Times of India quoted Greater Chennai Corporation's Adyar zonal chairman R Durairaj as saying.

The design includes elevated lanes on 100 Feet Road, ensuring smooth flow in both directions. Additionally, 5.5-meter-wide uni-directional down ramps near Five Furlong Road and Guru Nanak College, along with service roads and footpaths, will further enhance connectivity and pedestrian safety.

Korukkupet's Railway Flyover

There is a relief on the way to those who often complain over stuck in traffic at the railway gate in Korukkupet as tThe DMK government has approved a Rs railway flyover to put an end to this daily ordeal. This project is set to benefit around one lakh residents and budget of the project is R 70 crore.

The flyover will provide uninterrupted passage over the railway tracks, saving precious time and reducing frustration for thousands of commuters. It's a small but significant step towards making Chennai's traffic flow smoother and more predictable.

ECR's Coastal Lifeline: Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi

The East Coast Road (ECR), one of Chennai's congested stretches, is getting a major upgrade. It is a four-lane flyover from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi which will be constructed in Rs. 2,100-crore. The 14.2-kilometer will not only ease traffic but also enhance the travel experience for those heading to the city's southern suburbs and beyond.

With its wide lanes and strategic design, the ECR flyover will cater to the ever-growing number of vehicles plying this route. Whether you're heading to the beach or commuting to work, this flyover promises to make your journey faster and more enjoyable.

Apart from these flyovers, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has also announced plans to upgrade 570 kilometers of roads at an estimated cost of Rs. 486 crore.
