Heavy Rain Lashes Chennai: Check Latest Weather Report & Visuals

Several parts of Chennai, including Meenambakkam, Velachery, and Guindy witnessed heavy rainfall leading to traffic jams across Chennai city on Friday.

The Five Furlong Road in Chennai, linking Velachery to the Guindy Railway station, faced severe flooding. In just 90 minutes between 8.30 am to 10:00 am, Velachery and Alandur areas collectively recorded nearly 70 mm of rainfall, leading to substantial waterlogging, submerging some key roads in water over ankle-deep, according to a report in The Times Of India.

"Except for a few areas, the city largely remained stagnation-free," Dr J Radhakrishnan, the Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation, told the daily.

From 8:30 am to 10 am, Adyar recorded 36 mm, Puzhal recorded 29 mm and Perungudi recorded 26 mm.

Netizens on X shared videos depicting flooded roads in Guindy, as motorists struggled to navigate through the waterlogged streets.

The regional meteorological centre, in its latest weather report, said, "Sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Intermittent spells of moderate rain, heavy at times with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum temperature is likely to be 30-31°C and minimum temperature is likely to be 25-26°C."

Under the influence of a trough of low in easterlies over Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast in lower tropospheric levels, there is a prediction of isolated very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 3 and 4, as well as over Kerala and Mahe from November 3 to 5, the IMD said.

Giving an update about Chennai weather, a blogger, on X, said: "Lot of butterflies both over #Chennai and suburbs and in the sea as well. On and off spells of #Rains which will be heavy at times is likely to continue right through the day as thunderstorms push in under active Monsoon conditions. Those heading out take enough precautions for rains and possibly localized temporary water logging in a few places. In the meanwhile lot of storm around delta area as well over the coastal #TamilNadu stretch between #Pondicherry and #Nagapattinam. With strong easterlies these storms will move into parts of South TN and West Interior TN later in the afternoon / evening."

The regional meteorological center has issued a yellow alert (signifying heavy rainfall) for various southern and delta districts until November 6. Additionally, an orange alert (representing heavy to very heavy rainfall) has been declared for two districts - Theni and Dindigul - on November 4.

Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, Dindigul, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, and Tirupattur are expected to get good rainfall.
