From Nilgiris To New York: Tamil Nadu Artisans Craft 100 Life-Size Elephant Sculptures To Promote Coexistence
New York City has welcomed an extraordinary and eye-catching new addition to its streets - a traveling herd of 100 life-size elephant sculptures, as part of the 'Great Elephant Migration' exhibit. Crafted by skilled tribal artisans from Gudalur in the Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, these stunning sculptures are made from the invasive lantana plant, highlighting a unique intersection of art, conservation, and indigenous knowledge.
The 'Great Elephant Migration' is a global fundraising campaign with a mission to "amplify indigenous knowledge and inspire the human race to share space." The exhibit, organized by Elephant Family USA, is traveling across the United States, spreading the message of coexistence and raising awareness about the need to remove invasive species like lantana camara from forests to protect wildlife.

Art with a Purpose
Each elephant sculpture in this remarkable collection is a masterpiece created by the Coexistence Collective, a community of 200 indigenous artisans belonging to the Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan, and Soliga communities of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu. These artisans, led by conservationists Dr. Tarsh and Subhas, have used the invasive lantana weed to craft the sculptures, turning an ecological threat into a powerful symbol of conservation. Lantana camara, a highly invasive species, has been disrupting ecosystems across India, and by using it as their medium, the artisans are highlighting both the problem and a creative solution.

A Global Campaign for Coexistence
The 'Great Elephant Migration' is more than just a visual spectacle; it is a call to action. The campaign seeks to foster a global dialogue on coexistence, urging people to rethink how they share space with wildlife and address ecological imbalances. As the elephants travel across the US, they bring with them stories of indigenous wisdom and the urgent need to protect natural habitats from invasive species.
"By crafting these sculptures from lantana, the artisans are not only showcasing their incredible craftsmanship but also shedding light on a critical environmental issue," said one of the campaign's organizers. The use of lantana, which displaces native flora and threatens wildlife, is particularly poignant. The elephants symbolize the harmony between humans and nature that is needed to sustain biodiversity and ecological health.
Who is Behind This Initiative?
The Great Elephant Migration is orchestrated by Elephant Family USA, a charity dedicated to protecting Asian wildlife and their habitats. The campaign has garnered support from cultural tastemakers, conservationists, media personalities, and fashion icons. Notably, Indian luxury house Sabyasachi is a sponsor of the exhibit, adding its voice to the call for a more sustainable and conscious coexistence between humans and nature.
Spreading the Message Across America
As the herd of elephant sculptures makes its way through various cities in the United States, it is not only an artistic installation but also an educational experience. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the challenges faced by wildlife due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and invasive species. Through these sculptures, the Coexistence Collective and Elephant Family USA are bringing the story of India's elephants to the world, using art to inspire action and awareness.
