Foolish Move: Netizens Slam Vijay For Inviting Stampede Victims To Resort And Not Visiting Karur

Netizens have come down heavily on actor-turned-politician Vijay for inviting the families of the victims killed and injured in Karur stampede on September 27.

The 41 families have been invited to a resort in Mahabalipuram. Many families have landed in the place on Sunday afternoon. Vijay is scheduled to meet them today.

One user said, "Don't think I've seen anything like this- a VIP 5-star meet with victims of a stampede!!" The second user said, "It's evident that @TVKVijayHQ hasn't transitioned from movie star to politician. Unlike the legendary MGR and Jayalalitha who had no hesitation in mingling with the masses & doing their duties as political leaders, attentive to public distress, actor Vijay is clearly not cut out to be a mass leader. His marked disinclination to make a full fledged visit to Karur where he should meet the bereaved families of his own fans & admirers who had lost their lives in the stampede that horrific day, shows he hasn't got out of the film star bubble."

The third user criticised Vijay saying: "Anyone who has lost a loved one in their lives will understand how vulgar and despicable this is.." The fourth user commented, "The more I think about or see this the more I'm convinced that this is not normal. It would have been the easiest thing to make a visit to Karur for a day. There is some issue with @actorvijay that is preventing a logical reaction. His fans may not agree but it is what it is."

Actor Vijay is expected to have lunch with the family members today. As per a report in the Indian Express, 20 families had agreed to meet him in the resort. A top functionary told the English daily: . "The remaining 21 are reluctant," he said, "including some who questioned the logic of asking them to meet the superstar in Chennai instead of him visiting them at their homes."

A senior TVK leader privately admitted that the optics of summoning the grieving families to Vijay's "turf" (a coastal resort) instead of visiting their homes "may not sit well with the public" and conceded the situation "could have been handled more sensitively."

The meeting, where Vijay is expected to have lunch with the attendees, is seen as the likely pivot point for TVK to resume its political activities and revise its outreach strategies after a four-week period of silence. During this time, the party leadership refrained from commenting on key state developments, including the impact of the northeast monsoon and issues with paddy procurement.
