Get Ready To Pay More For Concerts In Tamil Nadu As Govt Mulls Imposing Entertainment Tax
Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a Bill in the Assembly aiming to impose a 10% entertainment tax on events like concerts, dramas, and shows. This tax would apply to any event organised by institutions that charge for entry, The Hindu reported.
Minister for Municipal Administration KN Nehru presented the Bill, highlighting the need for this provision.

The existing Tamil Nadu Local Authorities Entertainment Tax Act, 2017, allows local bodies to collect taxes on certain entertainment events. However, it lacks provisions for taxing events held by institutions, including educational ones, when admission fees are charged. The new Bill seeks to address this gap by introducing a 10% tax on each admission payment.
Opposition and Consideration
When Minister Nehru proposed the Bill in the House, AIADMK member Agri S.S. Krishnamurthy expressed his party's opposition to it. The Bill is scheduled for consideration on December 10, 2024. It aims to include provisions for taxing various events where admission fees are collected through tickets or other charges.
The definition of "institution" in the Bill is broad. It encompasses educational institutions, companies, societies, clubs, or any association of persons under any name. This ensures that all such entities conducting chargeable events fall under the tax's purview.
This legislative move reflects the government's intent to expand its revenue base by taxing a wider range of entertainment activities. By doing so, they aim to ensure that all forms of paid entertainment contribute fairly to state finances.
