Edappadi Election Result LIVE: EPS Takes On DMK's Kaasi, NTK's Priyadharshini

Edappadi, a predominantly rural Assembly constituency in Salem district, has remained in the political spotlight since its legislator, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), assumed office as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in 2017. The constituency has since come to symbolise his political journey and enduring influence within the AIADMK.

Palaniswami's electoral record in Edappadi reflects both resilience and consistency. He has won the seat five times-in 1989, 1991, 2011, 2016, and 2021-while facing defeats in 1996 and 2006. Despite these setbacks, he has managed to retain a firm grip over the constituency, which continues to be considered a stronghold of the AIADMK, aided in part by the significant presence of the Vanniyar community. The PMK, which also draws support from this community, has historically been an influential player in the region.

A grassroots leader who steadily climbed the ranks of the AIADMK, Palaniswami's elevation to the CM's post came as a surprise in 2017, when he was chosen as the legislature party leader with the backing of V.K. Sasikala. Once in office, he quickly consolidated his authority, navigating internal party challenges and outmanoeuvring rival factions, including that led by former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam. His tenure showcased a pragmatic political style, combining organisational control with strategic decision-making.

Now, as he seeks re-election from his native constituency, Palaniswami faces a critical test. His immediate challenge is not only to retain Edappadi but also to reverse the AIADMK's recent electoral setbacks and revitalise the party's cadre base ahead of a larger political battle for power in the state.

The DMK has fielded Kaasi, a 65-year-old party functionary, who is making his electoral debut. A long-time member of the party, Kaasi represents the DMK's attempt to make inroads into a constituency where it has traditionally struggled against the AIADMK's dominance.

Meanwhile, the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) has nominated Priyadharshini A, a 37-year-old post-graduate, reflecting the party's strategy of fielding relatively young and educated candidates to expand its appeal among voters.

However, Vijay's TVK has not fielded any candidate.

With established leadership, emerging challengers, and shifting political dynamics, Edappadi is set to witness a closely watched contest once again, carrying significance beyond its rural landscape and reflecting broader currents in Tamil Nadu politics.
