DMK Retains Iconic "Rising Sun" Symbol For 66th Consecutive Year, A Testament To Unwavering Identity
Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party marks a momentous occasion today, commemorating 66 years of steadfast allegiance to its iconic "rising sun" symbol. Established on March 2, 1958, the Election Commission officially recognized the rising sun as the exclusive symbol of the DMK, a legacy that remains untouched amidst the dynamic political landscape of Tamil Nadu.
In a political arena characterized by symbol changes and evolving identities, the DMK's adherence to the rising sun symbol stands as a testament to the party's unwavering principles and enduring identity. Over the decades, as other political parties in the state underwent symbol transformations, the DMK's commitment to its emblem became a symbol of constancy in the ever-shifting political tides.

While rival parties like the AIADMK underwent symbol changes sometimes, from two leaves to two doves or the rooster, the DMK's rising sun has remained a constant fixture, resonating with the electorate as a symbol of continuity and commitment. It's worth recalling that in the elections of January 1989, the faction led by MGR's widow, Janaki Ramachandran, was designated the symbols of two doves, while the group under Jayalalithaa's leadership adopted the rooster.
The political sagacity of leaders like M. Karunanidhi played a pivotal role in preserving the integrity of the DMK during challenging times, such as the split within the party and the departure of influential figures like Vaiko. Karunanidhi's strategic acumen ensured that the party not only weathered storms but also retained the emblematic rising sun, becoming synonymous with the party's enduring legacy.
The genesis of the rising sun symbol traces back to the early days of the DMK, when it was founded by Annadurai in 1949. The symbol gained official recognition on March 2, 1958, following the party's resounding success in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections in 1957, where it secured victories in 15 constituencies.
As the DMK reflects on 66 years of political history, the rising sun symbol remains a beacon of consistency, embodying the party's enduring commitment to its founding principles. The celebration of this historic milestone serves as a poignant reminder of the party's resilience and unwavering dedication to the people of Tamil Nadu.
