71-Year-Old DMDK Founder Vijayakanth Dies Due To Covid-19 Complications

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Leader and actor Vijayakanth passed away on Thursday. He was 71. The actor-turned-politician had earlier tested positive for COVID, his party has informed on 28 December. A bulletin from MIOT Hospitals, Chennai, said Vijayakant died due to Pneumonia.

"Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023," MIOT International said in a press release.

The revered Tamil actor, fondly referred to as "Captain" for his remarkable depictions of military roles in films, battled health complications. As per the party, due to breathing issues, Vijayakanth was earlier put on a ventilator. Since November, the former actor turned politician has been grappling with health concerns.

On December 11, Vijayakanth left MIOT Hospital in Chennai fully recovered after his party announced his discharge. They happily shared, "DMDK President Vijayakanth has fully recuperated and returned home this morning (11.12.2023)."

    However, a recent official statement from the hospital surprised fans and followers, revealing a slight decline in Vijayakanth's health, necessitating minimal pulmonary support. He had been admitted to the Chennai hospital on November 18 due to complaints of a cough, cold, and sore throat.

    Despite concerns about his worsening condition, on December 15, Vijayakanth's wife, Premalatha Vijayakanth, assumed the role of DMDK's general secretary.

    In her inaugural address, Premalatha Vijayakanth affirmed her dedication to the party and its members. Speaking in Tamil, she emphasized, "I have been entrusted with the role of General Secretary by Vijayakanth. This party was established for the people's welfare, and I will collaborate closely with all of you."

    She also addressed speculations regarding Vijayakanth's health, urging the media to refrain from disseminating false information. "Our leader stands here among you today. As both his wife and a member of the party, I have borne a great deal of anguish," she declared.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the passing away of DMDK founder-leader Vijayakanth and said his death has left a void that will be hard to fill.

    In a post on X, Modi said: ''Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions.''

    As a political leader, the Prime Minister said Vijayakanth was deeply committed to public service, and has left a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu's political landscape. ''His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti.''
