Coimbatore To Get Bigger Than Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium: Check Top 10 Stadiums With Highest Capacity
In an ambitious move, Tamil Nadu is set to build a cricket stadium in Coimbatore that will possibly eclipse the Narendra Modi Stadium's record as the world's largest cricket venue.
Currently, the Narendra Modi Stadium, which boasts a staggering seating capacity of 132,000, holds the top spot among global cricket stadiums.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, designed by Australia's Populous and constructed by Larsen & Toubro, was built on the site of the former Sardar Patel Stadium, which stood from 1982 to 2015 before its demolition. The new stadium, completed after five years of construction at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore, replaced the Melbourne Cricket Ground as the largest cricket stadium in the world.
As Coimbatore prepares to unveil its new stadium, it aims to set a new benchmark in cricketing infrastructure. The Tamil Nadu government has initiated the process by floating tenders to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed facility, according to a report in DT Next.
The stadium will be situated 16 kilometres from Coimbatore city on NH 544, which connects Salem and Kochi. Of the 200 acres owned by the State Prisons Department at the site, 198 acres will be allocated for the stadium once the DPR is finalized.
The planned stadium will not only surpass the Narendra Modi Stadium in terms of seating capacity but is also expected to include cutting-edge features. The Tamil Nadu government has cited the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as case studies for the project, with the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London serving as a reference point for design and functionality.
