Coimbatore’s International Cricket Stadium Gets Key Approval, Tenders Next
Coimbatore is set to get a major sporting infrastructure boost, with preparations for an international cricket stadium progressing rapidly.
In a major development, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) has secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to construct the stadium in Ondipudur. With this clearance, the project is now moving toward the tendering process and final approvals, as per the reports.

Early reports suggested that the new stadium could surpass the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world's largest cricket venue with a seating capacity of 132,000. However, the current focus has shifted toward creating a world-class, modern facility that prioritizes player and spectator experience over sheer size. Speculations indicate that the stadium could accommodate around 30,000 to 40,000 spectators.
Prime Location & Infrastructure
The stadium is planned on a 20-acre site, with an additional eight acres dedicated to parking. The land, currently under the State Prisons Department, is part of a larger 200-acre parcel near Ondipudur, close to the National Highway 544, which connects Salem and Kochi. Once the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is finalized, approximately 198 acres will be allocated for the stadium's development.
Next Steps
With the NOC in place, the next steps include finalizing tenders and obtaining further approvals before construction can commence. The stadium is expected to enhance Coimbatore's status as a major sporting hub, potentially hosting international and domestic cricket matches in the future.
Sports enthusiasts and cricket fans in Tamil Nadu are eagerly awaiting more details on this ambitious project, which promises to elevate the city's sporting landscape.
