Chennai Weather Update: Temperatures May Touch 42°C In Coming Days As Rains Likely To Tease Today
Chennai is staring at an intense spell of summer heat over the next 10 days, with temperatures likely to hover around 40°C and even touch 41-42°C in some suburbs, according to independent weather blogger Chennai Rains. The blogger warned that North Coastal Tamil Nadu would remain the hottest region in the state, while the much-awaited sea breeze may offer little relief in the coming days.
"If you thought Chennai was hot yesterday, there is bad news for you. Chennai summer has just started," the blogger wrote, adding that thunderstorms may continue to "tease" the city without bringing widespread rainfall. Interior districts, however, are expected to benefit from pre-monsoon showers triggered by wind instabilities.

Model forecasts cited by the blogger indicated a negligible sea breeze effect over Chennai on Wednesday, potentially pushing daytime temperatures to around 40.8°C. The city could continue to experience uncomfortable conditions even after sunset, with temperatures expected to remain around 35-36°C during the evening hours.
In another update, the blogger noted that the sea breeze was "struggling to penetrate the coast", especially along areas such as Neelankarai, where a spike in humidity hinted at weak marine influence. With several personal weather stations already recording 40°C, residents may have to endure prolonged heat before any respite arrives.
Despite the soaring temperatures, the official forecast from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has offered some hope for rain. The weather office said Chennai is likely to witness moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the coming days.

According to the RMC's latest bulletin, maximum temperatures rose by 3-4°C at isolated places across Tamil Nadu during the past 24 hours, while the rest of the state, including Puducherry and Karaikal, saw no major change. Tiruthani recorded the highest maximum temperature in Tamil Nadu at 40°C.
The weather department also noted that Kanyakumari and Ariyalur recorded the lowest minimum temperature among the plains at 24°C, while Kodaikanal remained the coolest hill station at 13°C.
Meteorologists are also closely monitoring the progress of the Southwest Monsoon, which is likely to set in over Kerala around May 26, with a model error margin of plus or minus four days. Several atmospheric systems, including a trough stretching from the southeast Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal across Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, are influencing weather patterns over South India.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely at isolated places in the ghat regions of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode and Dindigul districts, the Area Regional Meteorological Centre (ARMC) said.
For the rest of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Puducherry and Karaikal, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is expected at isolated places, offering at least some possibility of temporary relief from the sweltering heat.
