Chennai Weather: Is 2025 The Hottest Year Yet? Data Reveals Trends Since 2000
Every summer, a common topic of debate is whether "this year is hotter than ever". But how accurate is this claim? A closer look at the data from the Chennai AP IMD Observatory reveals intriguing trends in the city's maximum recorded temperatures over the past 24 years.
Weather blogger Chennai Rains (COMK) shared the data from the IMD Chennai AP IMD Observatory on its X account.

The Data Speaks
According to records, the highest temperature recorded as of this date (24th February 2024) stands at 35.3°C. While this is notably warmer than recent years, it falls short of the all-time high of 37.3°C recorded on 1st March 2009. However, 2024's temperature is higher than the corresponding dates in the past five years, fueling perceptions of a hotter summer.
Historical Trends
The data, spanning from 2000 to 2025, shows significant fluctuations in Chennai's early-summer heat. The year 2009 remains the hottest, with a scorching 37.3°C recorded in early March. Other notable peaks include 36.6°C in 2001 and 36.1°C in 2012. In contrast, 2014 was relatively cooler, with a maximum of just 32.8°C by mid-February.
Interestingly, 2025 is projected to surpass 2024, with a predicted high of 35.8°C by 5th March. This suggests that the upward trend in temperatures may continue, aligning with global concerns about climate change and rising heat levels.
What Does This Mean for Chennai?
The rising temperatures have practical implications for the city's residents. Increased heat can lead to higher energy consumption as people rely more on cooling appliances, strain on water resources, and health risks such as heatstroke and dehydration. Authorities have already begun issuing heatwave advisories, urging citizens to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
