Chennai Weather Alert: Light Rain Today, Tomorrow; Heavy Rainfall Warning For 10 Tamil Nadu Districts

Chennai is predicted to get light rain in the next 48 hours while heavy showers are expected in several districts in Tamil Nadu.

Some isolated places over Nilgiris, Ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, Erode, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts will get heavy rains for the next few days, the Regional Meteorological Department said in a statement.

Notably on Friday, over 20 districts in the state are likely to get heavy rains.

"Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Ghat areas of Coimbatore, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Dindigul, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari districts and Karaikal area, the weather monitoring agency said in its weather predictions for May 17.

According to RMD, the sky condition in Chennai is expected to be partly cloudy, with a possibility of light rain in certain areas. The maximum temperature is forecasted to range between 35-36°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 28-29°C.

Over the 24-hour period ending at 08:30 IST today (13.05.2024), temperatures across Tamil Nadu remained largely within normal ranges, with some areas experiencing slightly higher temperatures, particularly in the plains of interior Tamil Nadu where isolated pockets saw notably warmer conditions. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal reported normal temperatures.

The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Erode at 40.8°C (+2.4°C), followed closely by Karur Paramathi at 40.5°C (+3.8°C), and Vellore at 40.2°C (+2.6°C).

In the plains of the remaining interior of Tamil Nadu, temperatures ranged from 36°C to 41°C. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal experienced temperatures between 34°C and 36°C, while hilly regions saw temperatures between 22°C and 27°C. Chennai recorded normal maximum temperatures with MBK at 37.6°C (-0.8°C) and NBK at 35.8°C (-1.6°C).
