Chennai Water Supply Cut in North Chennai on Feb 20: Full List of Affected Areas

Residents in North Chennai should prepare for a dry spell as the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has announced a significant disruption in piped drinking water supply. The suspension is scheduled to facilitate critical pipeline interconnection works near J.K. Mahal on the Madhavaram-Chengundram Road.

Shutdown Schedule and Timing
The interruption is set to begin on Friday, February 20, at 10:00 PM and is expected to last until Saturday, February 21, at 10:00 AM.

During this 12-hour window, two major distribution hubs-the Thiruvottiyur Water Distribution Station and the Madhavaram Booster Station-will be completely non-operational. While the work is timed for overnight completion to minimize daytime impact, residents are urged to store adequate water by Friday evening, as pressure may take several hours to normalize after the 10:00 AM restart.

Areas Targeted by the Shutdown
The suspension will primarily impact the Thiruvottiyur (Zone 1) and Manali (Zone 2) administrative areas. Specifically, the following localities will face a total cutoff of piped water:

Thiruvottiyur Zone: Ernavoor, Raja Shanmuga Nagar, and Kargil Nagar.

Manali Zone: Manali Pudhu Nagar, Nappalayam, Sadayankuppam, Andarkuppam, Dwaraka Nagar, Manali, Mathur, and all surrounding residential colonies.

How Often Does the CMWSSB Cut Supply?
For many Chennaiites, these notices have become a recurring feature of city life. The CMWSSB typically implements shutdowns under three main circumstances:

Project Interconnections: As Chennai expands, new infrastructure-like the North Chennai Development Project or the new pipelines in extended areas-requires "tie-ins." These occur once or twice a month on average across different city zones.

Emergency Maintenance: Major leaks or bursts in the aged DI (Ductile Iron) pipes can lead to unscheduled shutdowns with very little notice.

Desalination Plant Overhauls: The Nemmeli and Minjur desalination plants, which provide a huge chunk of the city's water, undergo extensive maintenance roughly twice a year. These are often the most disruptive, sometimes lasting 3 to 5 days.

In North Chennai specifically, frequency has increased recently due to the rapid industrial and residential growth in the Manali and Madhavaram belts, necessitating more frequent network upgrades.
