This summer, the capital's electricity demand surged past the 5,000 MW mark on Wednesday night, setting a new record of 5,014 MW. To stabilise the grid, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL) carried out brief shutdowns of select distribution transformers in a few localities. Although such load shedding has been used earlier to maintain grid stability, these instances were not officially disclosed.

The peak of 5,014 MW was recorded at around 10.30 pm on 10 June, surpassing the previous high of 4,852 MW registered on 22 May this year. By comparison, in 2025 the city's peak demand stood at 4,663 MW, recorded on 14 May.
