Chennai Metro News: 35.53 Crore Travellers In 9 Years, 10.52 Crore In 2024 Alone - Check Year-Over-Year Data
Since its inauguration in 2015, a total of 35.53 crore passengers have travelled in metro in nine years, the Chennai Metro Rail said in a statement on Thursday.
The CMRL reported a significant surge in ridership in 2024, with over 10.52 crore passengers relying on Chennai Metro for their commute. The service has continually adapted to meet the growing demand for efficient public transportation.

The statement said, "CMRL commenced its Metro Train operations from 29th June 2015 and has become the lifeline for the people of Chennai. CMRL has witnessed a monumental increase in patronage in 2024 wherein 10.52 crore passengers travelled in Chennai Metro."
Year Over Year Passenger Details
• 2,80,52,357 passengers travelled between 29th June 2015 to 31st December 2018.
• 3,28,13,628 passengers travelled between 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2019.
• 1,18,56,982 passengers travelled between 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic lockdown - March 2020 - September 2020)
• 2,53,03,383 passengers travelled between 1st January 2021 to 31st December 2021.(COVID-19 pandemic lockdown - May 2021 - June 2021)
• 6,09,87,765 passengers travelled between 1st January 2022 to 31st December 2022.
• 9,11,02,957 passengers travelled between 1st January 2023 to 31st December 2023.
• 10,52,43,721 passengers travelled between 1st January 2024 to 31st December 2024.
So far, a total of 35,53,60,793 passengers have travelled in Chennai Metro between 29th June 2015 to 31st December 2024.
