Chennai Doctor Stabbed Allegedly By Patient's Son; Arrested
In a distressing incident at Kalaignar Multi-speciality Hospital in Chennai, Dr Balaji Jaganathan, a distinguished medical oncologist, was attacked by a 26-year-old man who posed as a patient.
This horrifying event took place around 10:15 am, shocking the hospital staff and patients alike. The assailant attempted to flee the scene after the attack but was he apprehended by the hospital's staff and later handed over to the law enforcement officials at Guindy police station.

Although the police have detained the suspect, they have withheld his identity from the public. It emerged that the motivation behind this atrocious act was rooted in a vendetta. The attacker's mother, Prema, had been a cancer patient under Dr. Balaji's care from May to November of the current year.
Following complications in her treatment, her son, along with three accomplices, plotted to seek revenge against the doctor, accusing him of negligence, according to a report The Times of India.
The attackers orchestrated their plan meticulously, with Prema's son acquiring an out-patient slip under the guise of seeking a consultation. Accompanied by his friends, he waited for his turn to meet Dr. Balaji. Upon gaining entry to the doctor's office, he launched a brutal attack, wielding a kitchen knife with which he stabbed the unsuspecting doctor in the neck, the report added.
Despite Dr Balaji's attempt to defend himself, he sustained critical injuries to his ear, head, and upper chest.
The medical community is reeling from the shock of this unprecedented attack. Dr. L Parthasarathy, the Hospital Director, provided an update on Dr. Balaji's condition, stating, "He has suffered multiple injuries to the scalp, head, neck, and ear. We are assessing the injuries. His condition is critical." Dr. Balaji is currently undergoing emergency surgery in a fight for his life.
In response to this violent act, the Service and PG Doctors Association has issued a strong condemnation and has called upon the government to ensure that swift justice is served to those responsible for this heinous crime. The association's members have also initiated a flash strike, suspending all non-emergency services at the hospital, to protest against the assault and demand measures to protect healthcare professionals.
This incident has sparked a wider conversation about the safety of medical staff in their workplaces, highlighting the need for stringent security measures to safeguard those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. The healthcare community and the public await justice for Dr. Balaji, hoping for his full recovery and the prevention of such tragic events in the future.
