NHRC issues notice to TN Govt
Chennai, July 3: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu chief secretary Mohan Verghese Chunkath asking for a report of the recent building collapse that killed over 45 people.

The 12- storeyed under construction building collapsed on Saturday evening. About 27 construction workers were rescued by Wednesday after a massive rescue operation was launched.

NHRC said that they read in a media report that the chief minister said that the building had many structural defects and the builder had violated various norms.

The Commission said that it read the media report and said that if any of those allegations were true it would be a serious violation of human rights of the people that died.

A person who was rescued Tuesday told officials that several people were watching television in a room along with him when the building collapsed.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu's Public Works Department declared "unsafe" an adjacent 11-storey building - part of the same project. The building will be pulled down once the rescue and recovery operations are over.
