Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway: Drive With Caution As Incomplete Work Poses Risk Of Accidents
If you've been near the new Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway lately, you've probably noticed the buzz-especially around the Karnataka stretch, which unofficially opened in December 2024. While this ₹17,900-crore greenfield project promises to slice the travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai from a grueling seven hours to just three, it's still under construction in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. That hasn't stopped thrill-seekers and curious drivers from taking it for a spin, though!
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has warning to motorists: proceed with caution. Construction is still ongoing in many areas, and unfinished stretches can be risky. Motorcyclists, in particular, have caught the authority's eye. Some riders have been using the expressway for stunts and "adventures," which are definitely not allowed.

Karnataka's 71-Km Teaser
For now, the 71-km section of the expressway in Karnataka has become a bit of a weekend hotspot. Villagers and Bengalureans have been making the most of the newly paved road, treating it as a scenic route for long drives and joyrides. The pattern is simple: drive the stretch, enjoy the smooth ride, and make a U-turn at the end. With no toll fees being collected yet, who could resist?
An official from NHAI confirmed, "There are exit points at Malur, Bangarpet, and Bethamangala. Since toll collection hasn't started, people are flocking to the road for leisure drives."
A Game-Changer in the Making
Once fully operational, this four-lane high-speed corridor will connect Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, revolutionizing travel in South India. The expressway's official launch is slated for August 2025, but even in its current state, it's clear that this is no ordinary road.
- Phase 1: Hoskote to Malur - 27.1 km
- Phase 2: Malur to Bangarpet - 27.1 km
- Phase 3: Bangarpet to Bethamangala - 17.5 km
Each phase is in its final stages, and soon commuters will have a seamless experience traveling between Bengaluru and Chennai.
The Bigger Picture
Dubbed South India's first greenfield expressway, this project isn't just about faster travel-it's about transforming the way people connect across states. Beyond convenience, the expressway is expected to boost trade, tourism, and economic growth in the region.
For now, the expressway is giving a sneak peek of what's to come. But until construction wraps up, drivers are advised to keep safety in mind and avoid turning it into a racetrack. The countdown to the grand opening has begun, and when it finally arrives, this expressway is sure to be a game-changer for travelers across the region.
