Chennai–Bengaluru Bullet Train: Vanathi Explains How Coimbatore Branch Fits Into High-Speed Rail Plan

Tamil Nadu BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan's letter to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has added a new and potentially transformative dimension to the Chennai-Bengaluru high-speed rail (HSR) project-one that could redraw the mobility and economic map of South India.

At the heart of her proposal is a simple but powerful idea: don't let the high-speed corridor remain a straight line between two metros. Instead, branch it out through Salem to Coimbatore and further extend it to Thiruvananthapuram via Kochi. According to Vanathi, this single extension could unlock far greater benefits than the original alignment alone.

The Chennai-Bengaluru HSR, announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, promises to slash travel time to just about 1 hour and 13 minutes, making it one of India's fastest intercity links. But Vanathi argues that Coimbatore-Tamil Nadu's industrial backbone-cannot be left as a bystander. A Salem-Coimbatore branch, she says, would instantly plug Coimbatore into the high-speed rail grid, giving it rapid access to both Chennai and Bengaluru, the state and tech capitals respectively.

Why does this matter? Because demand already exists-at scale. Coimbatore currently supports around 15 daily flights to Chennai and Bengaluru combined, more than 1,000 bus services, and a packed roster of train connections. This is not latent demand waiting to be created; it is demand crying out for faster, more efficient options. A high-speed branch would simply convert today's congested air and road traffic into rail ridership, easing pressure on airports and highways while offering predictable, time-saving travel.

The proposal doesn't stop at Coimbatore. Vanathi's letter envisions extending the line westward to Kochi and southward to Thiruvananthapuram, knitting together major economic and population hubs across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Such a corridor would connect textile clusters, IT parks, ports, universities, healthcare hubs, and tourism centres into one seamless high-speed network.

What makes the idea particularly compelling is its alignment with existing plans. Both Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments have proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors-Salem-Coimbatore, Coimbatore-Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram-Thrissur. Integrating these with the HSR branch, Vanathi argues, would avoid duplication, reduce land acquisition costs, and dramatically boost ridership. In effect, one infrastructure spine could serve both long-distance high-speed travel and high-frequency regional movement.

Economically, the implications are significant. Coimbatore and western Tamil Nadu are engines of manufacturing, MSMEs, start-ups, education, and healthcare. Faster mobility means quicker movement of talent, tighter business cycles, and stronger investor confidence-directly feeding into national goals like Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Viksit Bharat.

The timing of the pitch is strategic. The Railways have completed the final alignment survey for the Chennai-Bengaluru corridor, which will run at an operational speed of 320 kmph and span key stations such as Chennai Central, Parandur, Chittoor, Kolar, Whitefield, and Byappanahalli. With planning still underway, Vanathi is urging the Centre to commission a feasibility study now-before routes are frozen.

If accepted, the Salem-Coimbatore-Thiruvananthapuram extension could turn a fast train between two cities into a high-speed lifeline for an entire region. In the race for future-ready mobility, Vanathi's letter makes one thing clear: connectivity multiplies in value when it grows outward, not just forward.
