Can Thalapathy Vijay Repeat MGR's Success & Do What Rajinikanth Couldn't In Politics?

Thalapathy Vijay on Friday honoured the top students from classes 10 and 12 across Tamil Nadu, delivering an inspiring speech that emphasized self-discipline and urged students to stay away from negative influences, including drugs. While this gesture was celebrated by his fans, political observers view it as a strategic move to connect with the people, particularly the youth, who form a significant part of his fanbase.

Vijay's political entry through 'Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam' signals his serious intentions in the political arena. The intersection of cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu has long been a captivating drama, with actors often stepping off-screen to embrace political leadership. Vijay's entry is drawing comparisons to iconic figures like MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, whose transitions from the silver screen to political success have set high expectations for a new narrative in the state's political landscape.

Will Vijay Do What Rajini Couldn t

Historically, Tamil Nadu has seen actors like Sivaji Ganesan and Vijayakanth attempt political careers with mixed results. Ganesan struggled to convert his cinematic charisma into political success despite forming his own party. Vijayakant, on the other hand, rose to become the leader of the opposition but faced setbacks due to strategic missteps and health issues.

Another actor, Sarathkumar, founded the Samathuva Makkal Katchi and managed to become an MLA in alliance with the AIADMK under Jayalalithaa's leadership. Seeman has been striving to build a voter base with his Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK), but the party has yet to translate its support into significant electoral victories, securing an 8.1 percent vote share in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

Actor Kamal Haasan launched Makkal Needhi Maiam with high expectations but struggled to make a substantial impact and eventually aligned with the DMK. In contrast to Rajinikanth's indecision, Vijay quickly transformed his fan club, 'Vijay Makkal Iyakkam', into a political entity. Established in 2009 as a people's welfare body, it has been involved in various welfare measures and constituency-specific projects, particularly targeting students and youth.

Vijay's political entry comes at a time when the state is looking for alternatives beyond the established Dravidian parties. With his mass appeal and carefully crafted political image, Vijay aims to create a niche that transcends traditional political affiliations. The big question is whether Vijay will succeed like MGR and Jayalalithaa or face challenges like Vijayakant, Seeman, or Kamal Haasan. Will he withdraw like Rajinikanth, or make a significant impact? Only time will answer.
