Bring Back Annamalai To Lead Tamil Nadu BJP: Netizens Push For His Return After Poll Rout

Days after TVK's surprise victory in the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, a section of supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party has begun calling for the return of K Annamalai as the party's state president.

The BJP's performance in the election marked a sharp decline. The party, which had won four seats in 2021, was reduced to just one seat this time (Ooty) and secured a vote share of 2.97%. This is significantly lower than its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where it polled around 11% votes on its own after parting ways with the AIADMK.

Annamalai, a former state chief, had been credited with improving the party's visibility in Tamil Nadu during his tenure. However, after the BJP renewed its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the Assembly polls, he was replaced by Nainar Nagendran.

Reports had earlier indicated that Annamalai was not fully satisfied with the seat-sharing arrangement in the alliance with the AIADMK. He was reportedly unhappy that the BJP was not allotted constituencies where it believed it had stronger winning prospects. He eventually chose not to contest in the elections.

Following the results, several BJP supporters have taken to social media to express their views on the party's strategy and leadership in the state.

One user wrote, "You're right. From BJP's perspective, the best move can be to go alone in Tamil Nadu under Annamalai's leadership."

Another said, "The reality is before Annamalai, there was lot of hatred for Modi in Tamil Nadu. He single handedly changed that perspective. Then only Modi started visiting Tamil Nadu more frequently."

A third user commented, "Remember who created the 'vaccum' in Tamil Nadu? It was Annamalai. His 18.5% vote share in 2024 in a BJP centric alliance showed that there was a huge gap. He was sidelined & punished for doing exactly what the BJP did (and succeeded) in Bengal."

Some users were more direct in their criticism of the party's decision-making. "The biggest mistake BJP did was to sideline @annamalai_k," one post read.

Others urged the party's central leadership, including Amit Shah and Narendra Modi, to reinstate him. "Bring him back please... He is the power in TN. He will give you TN like Bengal. Trust him," another user wrote.

There were also calls to look ahead. "Now route is getting cleared for BJP... it's going to get very interesting in the coming days... they have to bring back Annamalai and start their groundwork for 2031," a user said.

Another added, "BJP should bring annamalai back as president of Tamil Nadu BJP, then BJP have good chance in future."

"The true leader of TN is annamalai... He will be back like a lion," read another comment.

The BJP has not officially responded to these demands. It remains to be seen whether the party will reconsider its leadership strategy in Tamil Nadu as it prepares for future elections.
