BJP Struggles To Secure Major Alliance Partner In Tamil Nadu Ahead Of Lok Sabha Polls
Chennai: As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu gears up for the Lok Sabha polls, one name seems to be conspicuously missing from the alliance game - that of Annamalai, the Chief of Tamil Nadu BJP. Despite concerted efforts, Annamalai finds himself yet to secure a major alliance partner, raising questions about the BJP's prospects in the state.
One significant development in recent times has been the Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) sealing an alliance with the BJP. However, this move has not been without its share of criticism. Many have pointed out the irony that G.K. Vasan, the leader of TMC, whose father was instrumental in pulling down the Vajpayee-led BJP government in 1999, has now aligned with the same party for reasons what some perceive as selfish. Vasan's alliance with the BJP, despite his family's history of opposing sectarian regimes, has raised eyebrows and sparked debates about political opportunism.

Furthermore, TMC's electoral performance under Vasan's leadership in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections paints a bleak picture. Despite hailing from the influential Thevar community, Vasan secured a mere 0.5% of the vote in the NDA alliance. This dismal showing underscores his lack of a solid support base, even within his own caste, further diminishing his bargaining power in the political arena.
The discord within the AIADMK-BJP alliance adds another layer of complexity to the situation. AIADMK's decision to break ties with the BJP, citing the attitude of Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai, has left the latter scrambling to find alternative allies. Annamalai's inability to salvage the alliance with AIADMK reflects poorly on his leadership and negotiation skills, leaving him with no choice but to seek alliances with smaller parties that may not yield significant electoral dividends.
Amidst these developments, major political parties in Tamil Nadu, such as the Congress, Communist parties, and the Pro Dalit Party, Viduthalai Ciruthaigal Katchi (VCK), have already aligned themselves with the DMK, leaving few major players undecided. While efforts are underway by both the BJP and AIADMK to court parties like PMK and DMDK, led by Vijayakanth's wife Premalatha, Annamalai has so far failed to secure a major alliance partner.
As the clock ticks down to the Lok Sabha polls, Annamalai finds himself facing mounting pressure to shore up BJP's prospects in Tamil Nadu. However, with each passing day, the challenge of finding a credible ally becomes increasingly daunting, raising concerns about BJP's ability to make significant inroads in the state's political landscape.
