According to party sources, the BJP's membership in Tamil Nadu has nearly doubled over the past year, reflecting a steady expansion of its grassroots structure - an organisational backbone that could prove decisive in 2026.

Modi Factor Takes Centre Stage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled participation in the NDA's mega conference at Madurantakam on January 23 has generated enormous political buzz. Holding such a high-profile event near Chennai ensures statewide attention, especially with leaders of all alliance parties expected to share the stage.

Beyond optics, Modi's visit carries substance. The inauguration of MSME hubs and irrigation projects during the visit underscores the NDA's development-focused pitch, directly addressing employment generation and agrarian needs. The event is widely seen as a strategic counter to the DMK's Karunanidhi centenary celebrations, offering voters a clear choice between legacy politics and performance-driven governance.

Nitin Nabin's recent visit to Tamil Nadu further cemented this momentum. After receiving a rousing welcome in Coimbatore, he visited the Perur Patteeswarar and Marudhamalai temples before chairing a crucial state-level strategy meeting. The discussions focused on identifying winnable constituencies, finalising candidates, strengthening booth committees and ensuring effective communication of Central government schemes such as PM-KISAN, housing initiatives and welfare programmes.

Cracks In DMK Alliance

In sharp contrast to the NDA's growing cohesion, the DMK-led alliance is showing visible signs of strain. Seat-sharing tensions with the Congress have intensified, with reports suggesting the DMK may reduce Congress' allocation from 40 seats to around 25-30. Congress leaders have publicly expressed resentment, accusing the DMK of treating them merely as a vote bank.

Statements from DMK leaders asserting the inevitability of single-party rule have further alienated allies. Differences over cultural and political issues, including disagreements involving film personalities and national leadership, have added to the unease.
