BJP-AIADMK Alliance For TN Elections? Rajya Sabha Polls Could Decide the Fate of Their Ties
TN Elections: The alliance between the BJP and AIADMK for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is expected to come to an end during the next round of Rajya Sabha elections that is scheduled to take place in July 2025, according to BJP sources.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) visited Delhi and met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This marks his first meeting with Shah since AIADMK severed ties with the BJP on September 25, 2023 citing political differences, but with elections approaching, the dynamics appear to be shifting.

Palaniswami was accompanied by senior party leaders, including M. Thambidurai, K.P. Munusamy, S.P. Velumani, and C. Vijayabaskar.
Although Palaniswami stated that his visit was primarily to discuss key issues concerning Tamil Nadu, speculation suggests that alliance talks were also a crucial part of the discussion. He maintained that any decision regarding possible revival of ties would be made closer to the elections.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai was summoned to Delhi for an urgent meeting with Amit Shah. The Tamil Nadu BJP leadership election, which was initially expected to be concluded by January, remains pending. According to reports, Party insiders suggest that Amit Shah wants to finalise the BJP's strategy for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections before making a decision on the state leadership.
As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu shifts, the future of the BJP-AIADMK alliance remains uncertain, with both parties weighing their options ahead of the crucial elections.
It must be noted that the two parties had joined hands in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election Assembly elections, resulting in the BJP securing four seats through their partnership. Following the death of its former leader J Jayalalithaa in 2016, the AIADMK formed an alliance with the BJP.
Six Rajya Sabha Members from Tamil Nadu to Retire in July 2025
Six Rajya Sabha members representing Tamil Nadu are set to retire on July 24, 2025. The retiring members include Anbumani Ramadoss (PMK), M Shanmugam (DMK), N Chandrasegharan (AIADMK), M Mohamed Abdulla (DMK), P Wilson (DMK), and Vaiko (MDMK).
Tamil Nadu currently has 18 members in the Rajya Sabha, and with these vacancies, the ruling DMK is expected to secure four seats, while the main opposition AIADMK is likely to win two seats in the elections. This tally also accounts for the nominees from the allies of both major Dravidian parties.
