Amid Protests, EPS Pays Tributes To Muthuramalinga Thevar In Pasumpon

Protesters intercepted AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami during his visit to Pasumpon for Thevar Guru Pooja, chanting slogans against him. Accompanied by former ministers Sellur Raju and Udayakumar, Palaniswami participated in the 116th Muthuramalinga Thevar Jayanthi and the 61st Guru Pooja ceremony.

Despite the protest, Palaniswami remained composed and smiling. He highlighted that it was the AIADMK government that revealed Thevar's portrait in the legislative assembly and mentioned former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's contribution in erecting Thevar's statue at Nandanam in Chennai.

He also said that Muthuramalinga Thevar was a man who considered 'nationalism' and 'spirituality' as his two eyes, and it is a great privilege to worship him.

Thevar Guru Pooja was celebrated with fervour across Tamil Nadu on Monday, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, a social reformer and political leader who fought for the rights of the Thevar community.

The main celebrations were held at Thevar's memorial in Pasumpon, where thousands of people gathered to offer their prayers and respects. The memorial was decorated with flowers and garlands, and special prayers were offered to Thevar.

Political leaders, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, also paid their respects to Thevar. In his speech, he said that Thevar was a visionary leader who fought for the rights of all oppressed people. He also urged the people to follow Thevar's ideals of social justice and equality.

Thevar Gurupooja is a major festival for the Thevar community, and it is a time for them to come together and reaffirm their community ties. The festival is often accompanied by cultural events, such as folk dances and music performances.

On February 9, 2014, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa, donated a 13-kg gold armor to adorn the 3.5-feet-tall statue of Thevar. The estimated value of this gold armor is around Rs 4 crore.

Currently, the armor is securely stored in a nationalized bank locker in Madurai. As per the protocol, after the AIADMK party treasurer and the trustee of the memorial sign off at the bank, the Golden Armor will be retrieved and handed over to the person in charge of the memorial annually between October 28 and 30 to mark Thevar Jayanthi Celebrations.
