16 Dead, Several Injured After A Blast In Firecrackers Factory In Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar District

A tragic explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district has claimed at least 16 lives and left several others injured.

The incident took place on Sunday, April 19, in Kattanarpatti village, creating panic and chaos in the surrounding area.

Blast Occurs During Work Hours

According to officials from the Fire and Rescue Department, the explosion happened in the afternoon when around 30 workers were inside the factory. They were reportedly assembling "fancy" firecrackers at the time of the blast.

The explosion was very powerful and caused parts of the building to collapse. Many workers were trapped under the debris, making rescue operations difficult.

The factory is said to be owned by Muthu Manickam, a resident of Govindanallur.

Rescue Operations and Injuries

Emergency services rushed to the spot soon after the explosion. Firefighters and rescue teams worked quickly to pull out those trapped inside the damaged structure.

At least six people were injured in the incident. They were immediately taken to the Virudhunagar Government Hospital for treatment. Officials have said that some of the injured are in critical condition.

Chief Minister MK Stalin Expresses Grief

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident. He offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

In a message shared on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the explosion.

He also directed ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to immediately visit the accident site. They have been asked to oversee the rescue efforts and provide support to the affected families.

The Chief Minister also spoke to the District Collector and instructed officials to ensure that all necessary help is provided without delay.

Authorities are expected to begin a detailed investigation to find out the exact cause of the explosion. Incidents like this have raised concerns about safety measures in firecracker manufacturing units in the region.
