Rishad Premji Advocates Work-Life Balance: Why Hybrid Work Is Key To Employee Well-Being

Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji has underscored the importance of work-life balance, highlighting how hybrid work models can benefit the workforce.

Speaking at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024, Premji emphasized that maintaining balance is a personal responsibility, stating, "Work-life is something you have to define for yourself; organizations won't do it for you."

This statement comes as a counterpoint to recent remarks by Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, who advocated for a rigorous 70-hour work week and expressed dissatisfaction with India's shift from a six-day to a five-day work week in 1986. Premji clarified that work-life balance extends beyond traditional office hours, noting, "The concept of work-life has evolved. It's not just about when you leave the office, but also about freedom at work, such as managing personal time without interruptions."

Wipro's Approach to Supporting Work-Life Balance

Premji revealed that Wipro trains its managers to recognize signs of employee burnout and engage in open conversations about maintaining balance. The company also supports hybrid work, allowing employees to visit the office just twice a week.

"Hybrid work helps employees balance professional and personal responsibilities more effectively," Premji said, adding that organizations must create environments where employees feel supported.

The Changing Landscape of Work Culture

The conversation around work-life balance has become especially pertinent as IT giants like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro urge employees to return to office spaces post-pandemic. While Murthy's push for longer work weeks has stirred debate, Premji advocates a more empathetic approach, emphasizing flexibility and mental well-being as key to a productive workforce.

Wipro's focus on fostering a people-sensitive culture reflects a growing shift in how organizations view employee satisfaction, with work-life balance becoming a central theme in discussions about modern work practices.
